There is conflicting evidence concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer treatment. But, the majority of researchers agree that there is a resveratrol prostate cancer prevention connection. Antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatories are believed to help prevent a variety of different types of cancers.

Some may say that there is no proven benefit to humans, but proving that something prevents cancerous growths is difficult to do in humans.

First there is the question of experimenting on human beings. Then there is a moral problem about withholding something that is potential beneficial from a test group.

Last, there's the matter of time. A study would need to be ongoing for the study group's entire life and there would still be no way to determine how many of the people might have developed the disease, had they not been given the active supplement.

So, when it comes to resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention, the best suggestion is to give it a try. It can't hurt and it might help.

Besides the resveratrol prostate cancer prevention potential, there are other possible health benefits to supplementation, including a decreased risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and possibly a longer lifespan.

Oxidation affects all forms of life. Without it, nothing would ever rot, rust, die or biodegrade in other ways and the planet would soon be overcrowded. For people, animals and all life, there is a time to live and a time to die. Most of us would just like to live the longest healthiest life possible.

In order to do that, we must protect ourselves from oxidation, as much as possible.

The resveratrol prostate cancer preventative mechanism has partly to do with preventing oxidation, but it has also been shown in the laboratory to retard tumor growth and even cause cancer cells to die.

Many other plant compounds have been shown to prevent oxidation, including those found in green tea.

In fact, in the US, green tea supplements are allowed to carry the claim that the supplement may help prevent prostate and breast cancers. The resveratrol and prostate cancer research has not come quite as far as that concerning green tea.

So, there are no FDA verified health claims for the supplement.

There are some alternative practitioners that may recommend a resveratrol prostate cancer treatment, but typically, they suggest a variety of plant extracts, including lycopene from the tomato, catechins from green tea, extracts from saw palmetto and a kind of nutritive "cocktail".

Judging by many years of evidence, good nutrition is the key to a healthy life. Researchers want to learn which nutrients are most important, but it is likely that no one is more important than any other.

If you are interested in resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention, the supplements to look for are those with an enteric coating. It is one of the many nutrients that are not highly bio-available.

If you are interested in a resveratrol prostate cancer treatment, I suggest that you seek the help of a doctor of naturopathic medicine.

That type of doctor will give you a complete plan to follow, which will almost surely include conventional treatments, as well.

More research is still being conducted concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer.

In the mean time, there are excellent health supplements on the market. You just need to shop with care.

As the most common cancer in men in the United States, prostate cancer affects thousands of men. Prostate cancer research aims to raise money and awareness to contribute towards improving treatment and finding a cure or cures for this disease.

Prostate cancer is extremely rare in men under 45, it commonly affects men in their 50's and is most often diagnosed in men in their 70's. As it is a cancer that specifically affects older men, it often goes undetected as it can have no symptoms in the early stages or the symptoms are unnoticed, or put down to 'old age'.

As yet there are no cures for prostate cancer, so research looks into this, as well as improving the conditions for men currently suffering from prostate cancer. Research also looks at how to improve the current treatments and how to prevent the cancer from reoccurring after treatment.

The prostrate gland is located between the bladder and rectum and is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland is used in the production and storage of seminal fluid.

The current treatments for prostate cancer depend on if the cancer has metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body, especially to the bones or lymph nodes, or not. If the cancer is still contained within the prostate then radiation therapy can be undertaken to kill the cancer cells with x-rays.

A radical prostatectomy can also be performed. This is surgery to remove the entire prostate gland. If the surgery is successful and the cancer is all removed then the likelihood of a recurrence is low. Recurrence of the cancer is slightly higher if radiation therapy is undertaken.

If the cancer has spread outside of the prostate gland then radiation therapy and radical prostatectomy are no longer treatment options. Hormone therapy can be undertaken to limit the growth of the hormone. Research has shown that prostate cancer growth is linked to male hormones called androgens.

Androgens, such as testosterone, are produced in the testicles and these hormones can cause the tumor to grow very quickly which increases the risk of the cells spreading. Therefore by limiting the amount of male hormones, you can slow the growth of the tumor. This can be done by medication, although sometimes the testicles are removed to assist the hormone treatment.

The other treatment option is called 'watchful waiting' or 'active surveillance'. This is when no medical treatment is undertaken, however you are closely monitored by your doctor and tests are done to detect any changes in the tumor.

It is hoped that with continued prostate cancer research that treatments will exist and more options will become available, especially to reduce the incidence of reoccurrence after treatment. The eventual aim of prostate cancer research is to find a cure for this deadly disease.

The prostate is an organ located close to the bladder in men. Unfortunately it is very susceptible to genetic damage with age and many men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.

It is recommended that all men above the age of 40 are tested for the condition every 5 years, and tested once a year from the age of 50. The initial tests usually take the form of prostate specific antigen testing and a procedure known as a digital rectum examination. If the doctor feels that there is any likelihood that the patient has cancer then he will recommend a biopsy. A specialist will take a look at the biopsy samples under a microscope and report the results to a doctor using a system known as Gleason grading.

The specialist will give a grade of between one and five to each sample depending upon how advanced the cancer is. A Gleason grade of one indicates that the cells in the tissue look close to normal, whereas a grade of five indicates very abnormal cancerous cells are seen.

As it is a multi focal condition it is usual to take 12 samples during a prostate biopsy. The specialist will look at all of these and report the results of the two samples with the largest areas of cancerous cells. He will give the results in a form of a Gleason Score, which is made up of two grades as determined in the method outlined above. The results are given with the sample with the largest area of cancer first, and a total. For example Gleason score 3 + 2 = 5, is more advanced than 2 + 3 = 5.

If a person is found to be suffering from prostate cancer then there are many ways in which the condition can be treated, if it is treated at all. As it is slow growing it is often the case that the patient will die of other things first and so the condition will be monitored as opposed to treated. If treatment is required then it is good to know that many methods such as radiation and hormonal therapy are often very successful.

What if I told you that it's in your best interest to have a cup of green tea? What if I mention green tea and prostate cancer in the same sentence?

Here's a more descriptive question that should be asked...what's in green tea that reduces the risk of prostate cancer?

Green tea contains polyphenols (an antioxidant phytochemical) which help prevent the spread of prostate cancer. The polyphenols mobilize several molecular pathways that shut down the increased production and spread of tumor cells, while inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that feed the cancer with nourishment according to research which was published in Cancer Research in the December 2004 issue.

Although the green tea polyphenols did show great signs, the effects were seen in an animal study within 6 months of continuous infusion.

That was an animal study, here's a case control study involving 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospital controls.

It was found in the case control study that:

· men drinking the most green tea were found to have an 86% reduced risk of prostate cancer
· compared to those drinking the least

Since green tea contains lycopene, another similar case study was done but this time studying lycopene-rich fruits and vegetables (such as tomatoes, apricots, pink grapefruit, watermelon, papaya, and guava).

It was found in this study that:

· men who most frequently enjoyed the above mentioned foods were 82% less likely to have prostate cancer
· compared to those consuming the least lycopene-rich foods

I guess it's obvious then, by choosing to drink green tea regularly and eat the fruits and vegetables rich in the carotenoid and lycopene, this may greatly reduce a man's risk of developing prostate cancer. Or, I could provide you with five tips to help you get in the habit of drinking green tea and eating lycopene-rich foods...like:

1) Drink a quart of iced green tea throughout the day
2) Snack on apricots and almonds
3) For breakfast eat half a grapefruit
4) Start your lunch or dinner with spicy tomato juice on the rocks with a twist of lime
5) And, for dinner top your whole wheat pasta with olive oil, pine nuts, feta cheese and a tomato sauce

So, as we've read green tea and prostate cancer are meant to be in the same sentence but what if you have no time to cook, pack carotenoid and lycopene rich lunches or even drink a quart (4 cups) of green tea a day? What is the best way to incorporate green tea into a diet healthy lifestyle?

The best and most popular way is to take green tea in the form of a health supplement.

The great news is that you don't have to keep track of how much green tea you've taken, or for that matter study up on the type of foods you have to eat in order to get those vitamins, amino acids and specialty nutrients called carotenoid and lycopene that help reduce the risk of prostate cancer because high quality health supplements already contain the amounts needed!

However, you should be aware that it's advised to take green tea extract, carotenoid and lycopene as part of a multi-supplement since the many ingredients will work synergistically with each other.

What's stopping you from doing more research on green tea and prostate cancer because it's not only for you, it's also for your family.

Maintaining good nutrition for Prostate Cancer is essential to help combating the side-effects of prostate cancer treatment. This can give you more energy and you will probably also feel better.

• Maintain a Basic Calorie Intake - Maintain the basic calorie needs of your body while dealing with prostate cancer is important. If you suffer from prostate cancer and you maintain a stable weight, then the estimated calorie intake is possibly about fifteen calories per pound of weight.

If you are losing weight, then you might add five hundred calories every day. For example, if a person weighs 160 pounds, then the caloric intake of the person should be 2,260 calories each day to maintain a stable weight.

• Take Protein Each Day to Tackle Prostate Cancer - Proteins help the body in repairing and rebuilding damaged body tissue by prostate cancer. An estimated protein intake might be 0.5 to 0.6 grams for every pound of body weight. For example, a person weighing one hundred and fifty pounds requires around seventy-five to ninety grams of protein intake per day. Foods that are rich in proteins are dairy products, meat, eggs, fish and legumes - especially beans. 8 oz of milk - 8 grams of protein. One ounce of fish, meat or poultry - 7 grams of protein

• Drink Enough Fluids - Drink around eight cups of fluids each day. This is the best way of preventing dehydration. Fluids can be water, milk, juice, milkshakes, gelatine, broths and other beverages. Avoid fluids that contain caffeine or excess sugar. However, if prostate cancer treatment's side effect is diarrhoea and vomiting, then you will need to consume extra fluids.

• Enough Vitamins- If your food is not vitamin-rich, then you may need to take vitamin supplements. Natural sources of vitamins include nuts, olive oil, seeds, avocado oil, non-fat milk, peas and wheat germ.

• Foods That Are Rich in Lycopene and Quercetin - These plant pigments promote health and may have cancer-fighting abilities. Foods that are rich in lycopene are watermelons, papaya, red grapefruit, red berries and tomatoes. Quercetin has anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties that may be beneficial in reducing the pain of the inflamed prostate. Foods that are rich in quercetin are green and black tea, apples, onions, red wine, citrus fruits, raspberries, red grapes, broccoli, citrus fruits, cherries and leafy green vegetables.

• Get a Dietician's Help - A dietitian will provide you suggestions to improve your eating. This might cover taste changes, feelings of fullness and any difficulty in swallowing. Your dietitian can guide you with ways to maximize the calories and proteins. There are many tips that a dietitian may provide you, which may be beneficial for you and your health.

Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that consists of cells from the prostate gland. The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but it is not believed to be related to benign prostatic hypertrophy. The risk factors for prostate cancer include advancing age, genetics, hormonal influences and environmental factors such as toxins, chemicals and industrial products. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. Symptoms and signs are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer. Symptoms include a diminished flow of urine, burning urination or blood in the urine. In the late stages, due to the spread of the tumor, other symptoms like back pain, pelvic pain, pain in the abdomen, jaundice, chest pain and cough are seen. Watchful waiting, surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and cryotherapy are the standard line of treatment for this condition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of prostate cancer is aimed at treating the local tumor and preventing or reducing its spread. Medicines used to treat the local tumor are: Triphala-Guggulu, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Arogya-Vardhini, Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Erandmool (Ricinus communis), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis), Marich (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Pashandbhed (Bergenia lingulata), Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera), Sahinjan (Moringa pterygosperma), Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica) and Varun (Crataeva nurvala). Medicines like Kanchnaar-Guggulu and Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha are given in high doses to prevent the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.

Medicines like Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Trivang-Bhasma, Tamra-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma are used in combination with other medicines to both improve the immune status of the body and to help control the tumor and prevent its spread.

Ayurvedic medicines can be used as additional therapy at any stage of conventional treatment, in order to improve the therapeutic response and the overall survival rate. All such patients should be under the regular care and supervision of an Oncology team.

Is prostate cancer recovery achievable? Survival rates quoted by doctors depend upon how far the cancer has spread in the body. Treatments typically offered by oncologists include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Yet cancer survivor and author, Karon Beattie, believes that conventional treatments are often ineffective. In her book, Natural Cancer Treatments That Work, Beattie cites studies that show there is no difference in the survival rates between prostate cancer patients who had surgery and the controls who did not and refers to medical reports that radical surgery for prostate cancer tend to spread the disease.

Beattie's book is a collection of over 350 alternative cancer treatments poorly recognised by mainstream doctors because the treatments are generally not patentable by drug companies. She claims that these treatments have enabled over 2,000 people to beat cancer.

Specifically in relation to prostate cancer, Beattie describes how an Australian chemist accidentally discovered a low-cost alkalizing powder to successfully treat his own cancer and help others with prostate cancer.

In addition, Beattie writes about a natural extract that dramatically helped a prostate cancer patient with rapidly progressive metastasis. A research team found that the extract suppressed solid tumor sarcoma by 96.7% in laboratory trials. This outcome seems astonishing for a little known treatment.

Beattie reports that Stanford University researchers found a common anti-biotic shrunk prostate cancers and showed an ability to prevent the initial spread of cancer.

In addition, Beattie provides 196 first hand accounts of people who beat prostate cancer and how they did it. If these stories are accurate, why are these treatments unrecognised by mainstream medicine?

Beattie believes that even though many of the treatments were discovered by respected scientists and researchers, drug companies have little interest in investing in human clinical trials because natural treatments are unpatentable and therefore unprofitable. She believes that cancer patients are being shortchanged and have to trawl the internet looking for treatments successfully used by thousands to beat their cancer.

People hoping for prostate cancer recovery will find these compelling stories difficult to ignore in their efforts to survive.
