There is conflicting evidence concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer treatment. But, the majority of researchers agree that there is a resveratrol prostate cancer prevention connection. Antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatories are believed to help prevent a variety of different types of cancers.

Some may say that there is no proven benefit to humans, but proving that something prevents cancerous growths is difficult to do in humans.

First there is the question of experimenting on human beings. Then there is a moral problem about withholding something that is potential beneficial from a test group.

Last, there's the matter of time. A study would need to be ongoing for the study group's entire life and there would still be no way to determine how many of the people might have developed the disease, had they not been given the active supplement.

So, when it comes to resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention, the best suggestion is to give it a try. It can't hurt and it might help.

Besides the resveratrol prostate cancer prevention potential, there are other possible health benefits to supplementation, including a decreased risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and possibly a longer lifespan.

Oxidation affects all forms of life. Without it, nothing would ever rot, rust, die or biodegrade in other ways and the planet would soon be overcrowded. For people, animals and all life, there is a time to live and a time to die. Most of us would just like to live the longest healthiest life possible.

In order to do that, we must protect ourselves from oxidation, as much as possible.

The resveratrol prostate cancer preventative mechanism has partly to do with preventing oxidation, but it has also been shown in the laboratory to retard tumor growth and even cause cancer cells to die.

Many other plant compounds have been shown to prevent oxidation, including those found in green tea.

In fact, in the US, green tea supplements are allowed to carry the claim that the supplement may help prevent prostate and breast cancers. The resveratrol and prostate cancer research has not come quite as far as that concerning green tea.

So, there are no FDA verified health claims for the supplement.

There are some alternative practitioners that may recommend a resveratrol prostate cancer treatment, but typically, they suggest a variety of plant extracts, including lycopene from the tomato, catechins from green tea, extracts from saw palmetto and a kind of nutritive "cocktail".

Judging by many years of evidence, good nutrition is the key to a healthy life. Researchers want to learn which nutrients are most important, but it is likely that no one is more important than any other.

If you are interested in resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention, the supplements to look for are those with an enteric coating. It is one of the many nutrients that are not highly bio-available.

If you are interested in a resveratrol prostate cancer treatment, I suggest that you seek the help of a doctor of naturopathic medicine.

That type of doctor will give you a complete plan to follow, which will almost surely include conventional treatments, as well.

More research is still being conducted concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer.

In the mean time, there are excellent health supplements on the market. You just need to shop with care.

As the most common cancer in men in the United States, prostate cancer affects thousands of men. Prostate cancer research aims to raise money and awareness to contribute towards improving treatment and finding a cure or cures for this disease.

Prostate cancer is extremely rare in men under 45, it commonly affects men in their 50's and is most often diagnosed in men in their 70's. As it is a cancer that specifically affects older men, it often goes undetected as it can have no symptoms in the early stages or the symptoms are unnoticed, or put down to 'old age'.

As yet there are no cures for prostate cancer, so research looks into this, as well as improving the conditions for men currently suffering from prostate cancer. Research also looks at how to improve the current treatments and how to prevent the cancer from reoccurring after treatment.

The prostrate gland is located between the bladder and rectum and is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland is used in the production and storage of seminal fluid.

The current treatments for prostate cancer depend on if the cancer has metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body, especially to the bones or lymph nodes, or not. If the cancer is still contained within the prostate then radiation therapy can be undertaken to kill the cancer cells with x-rays.

A radical prostatectomy can also be performed. This is surgery to remove the entire prostate gland. If the surgery is successful and the cancer is all removed then the likelihood of a recurrence is low. Recurrence of the cancer is slightly higher if radiation therapy is undertaken.

If the cancer has spread outside of the prostate gland then radiation therapy and radical prostatectomy are no longer treatment options. Hormone therapy can be undertaken to limit the growth of the hormone. Research has shown that prostate cancer growth is linked to male hormones called androgens.

Androgens, such as testosterone, are produced in the testicles and these hormones can cause the tumor to grow very quickly which increases the risk of the cells spreading. Therefore by limiting the amount of male hormones, you can slow the growth of the tumor. This can be done by medication, although sometimes the testicles are removed to assist the hormone treatment.

The other treatment option is called 'watchful waiting' or 'active surveillance'. This is when no medical treatment is undertaken, however you are closely monitored by your doctor and tests are done to detect any changes in the tumor.

It is hoped that with continued prostate cancer research that treatments will exist and more options will become available, especially to reduce the incidence of reoccurrence after treatment. The eventual aim of prostate cancer research is to find a cure for this deadly disease.

The prostate is an organ located close to the bladder in men. Unfortunately it is very susceptible to genetic damage with age and many men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.

It is recommended that all men above the age of 40 are tested for the condition every 5 years, and tested once a year from the age of 50. The initial tests usually take the form of prostate specific antigen testing and a procedure known as a digital rectum examination. If the doctor feels that there is any likelihood that the patient has cancer then he will recommend a biopsy. A specialist will take a look at the biopsy samples under a microscope and report the results to a doctor using a system known as Gleason grading.

The specialist will give a grade of between one and five to each sample depending upon how advanced the cancer is. A Gleason grade of one indicates that the cells in the tissue look close to normal, whereas a grade of five indicates very abnormal cancerous cells are seen.

As it is a multi focal condition it is usual to take 12 samples during a prostate biopsy. The specialist will look at all of these and report the results of the two samples with the largest areas of cancerous cells. He will give the results in a form of a Gleason Score, which is made up of two grades as determined in the method outlined above. The results are given with the sample with the largest area of cancer first, and a total. For example Gleason score 3 + 2 = 5, is more advanced than 2 + 3 = 5.

If a person is found to be suffering from prostate cancer then there are many ways in which the condition can be treated, if it is treated at all. As it is slow growing it is often the case that the patient will die of other things first and so the condition will be monitored as opposed to treated. If treatment is required then it is good to know that many methods such as radiation and hormonal therapy are often very successful.

What if I told you that it's in your best interest to have a cup of green tea? What if I mention green tea and prostate cancer in the same sentence?

Here's a more descriptive question that should be asked...what's in green tea that reduces the risk of prostate cancer?

Green tea contains polyphenols (an antioxidant phytochemical) which help prevent the spread of prostate cancer. The polyphenols mobilize several molecular pathways that shut down the increased production and spread of tumor cells, while inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that feed the cancer with nourishment according to research which was published in Cancer Research in the December 2004 issue.

Although the green tea polyphenols did show great signs, the effects were seen in an animal study within 6 months of continuous infusion.

That was an animal study, here's a case control study involving 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospital controls.

It was found in the case control study that:

· men drinking the most green tea were found to have an 86% reduced risk of prostate cancer
· compared to those drinking the least

Since green tea contains lycopene, another similar case study was done but this time studying lycopene-rich fruits and vegetables (such as tomatoes, apricots, pink grapefruit, watermelon, papaya, and guava).

It was found in this study that:

· men who most frequently enjoyed the above mentioned foods were 82% less likely to have prostate cancer
· compared to those consuming the least lycopene-rich foods

I guess it's obvious then, by choosing to drink green tea regularly and eat the fruits and vegetables rich in the carotenoid and lycopene, this may greatly reduce a man's risk of developing prostate cancer. Or, I could provide you with five tips to help you get in the habit of drinking green tea and eating lycopene-rich foods...like:

1) Drink a quart of iced green tea throughout the day
2) Snack on apricots and almonds
3) For breakfast eat half a grapefruit
4) Start your lunch or dinner with spicy tomato juice on the rocks with a twist of lime
5) And, for dinner top your whole wheat pasta with olive oil, pine nuts, feta cheese and a tomato sauce

So, as we've read green tea and prostate cancer are meant to be in the same sentence but what if you have no time to cook, pack carotenoid and lycopene rich lunches or even drink a quart (4 cups) of green tea a day? What is the best way to incorporate green tea into a diet healthy lifestyle?

The best and most popular way is to take green tea in the form of a health supplement.

The great news is that you don't have to keep track of how much green tea you've taken, or for that matter study up on the type of foods you have to eat in order to get those vitamins, amino acids and specialty nutrients called carotenoid and lycopene that help reduce the risk of prostate cancer because high quality health supplements already contain the amounts needed!

However, you should be aware that it's advised to take green tea extract, carotenoid and lycopene as part of a multi-supplement since the many ingredients will work synergistically with each other.

What's stopping you from doing more research on green tea and prostate cancer because it's not only for you, it's also for your family.

If you would like to learn more about green tea extract and other healthy active supplements, which I personally take, visit my website now.

Maintaining good nutrition for Prostate Cancer is essential to help combating the side-effects of prostate cancer treatment. This can give you more energy and you will probably also feel better.

• Maintain a Basic Calorie Intake - Maintain the basic calorie needs of your body while dealing with prostate cancer is important. If you suffer from prostate cancer and you maintain a stable weight, then the estimated calorie intake is possibly about fifteen calories per pound of weight.

If you are losing weight, then you might add five hundred calories every day. For example, if a person weighs 160 pounds, then the caloric intake of the person should be 2,260 calories each day to maintain a stable weight.

• Take Protein Each Day to Tackle Prostate Cancer - Proteins help the body in repairing and rebuilding damaged body tissue by prostate cancer. An estimated protein intake might be 0.5 to 0.6 grams for every pound of body weight. For example, a person weighing one hundred and fifty pounds requires around seventy-five to ninety grams of protein intake per day. Foods that are rich in proteins are dairy products, meat, eggs, fish and legumes - especially beans. 8 oz of milk - 8 grams of protein. One ounce of fish, meat or poultry - 7 grams of protein

• Drink Enough Fluids - Drink around eight cups of fluids each day. This is the best way of preventing dehydration. Fluids can be water, milk, juice, milkshakes, gelatine, broths and other beverages. Avoid fluids that contain caffeine or excess sugar. However, if prostate cancer treatment's side effect is diarrhoea and vomiting, then you will need to consume extra fluids.

• Enough Vitamins- If your food is not vitamin-rich, then you may need to take vitamin supplements. Natural sources of vitamins include nuts, olive oil, seeds, avocado oil, non-fat milk, peas and wheat germ.

• Foods That Are Rich in Lycopene and Quercetin - These plant pigments promote health and may have cancer-fighting abilities. Foods that are rich in lycopene are watermelons, papaya, red grapefruit, red berries and tomatoes. Quercetin has anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties that may be beneficial in reducing the pain of the inflamed prostate. Foods that are rich in quercetin are green and black tea, apples, onions, red wine, citrus fruits, raspberries, red grapes, broccoli, citrus fruits, cherries and leafy green vegetables.

• Get a Dietician's Help - A dietitian will provide you suggestions to improve your eating. This might cover taste changes, feelings of fullness and any difficulty in swallowing. Your dietitian can guide you with ways to maximize the calories and proteins. There are many tips that a dietitian may provide you, which may be beneficial for you and your health.

Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that consists of cells from the prostate gland. The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but it is not believed to be related to benign prostatic hypertrophy. The risk factors for prostate cancer include advancing age, genetics, hormonal influences and environmental factors such as toxins, chemicals and industrial products. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. Symptoms and signs are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer. Symptoms include a diminished flow of urine, burning urination or blood in the urine. In the late stages, due to the spread of the tumor, other symptoms like back pain, pelvic pain, pain in the abdomen, jaundice, chest pain and cough are seen. Watchful waiting, surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and cryotherapy are the standard line of treatment for this condition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of prostate cancer is aimed at treating the local tumor and preventing or reducing its spread. Medicines used to treat the local tumor are: Triphala-Guggulu, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Arogya-Vardhini, Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Erandmool (Ricinus communis), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis), Marich (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Pashandbhed (Bergenia lingulata), Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera), Sahinjan (Moringa pterygosperma), Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica) and Varun (Crataeva nurvala). Medicines like Kanchnaar-Guggulu and Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha are given in high doses to prevent the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.

Medicines like Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Trivang-Bhasma, Tamra-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma are used in combination with other medicines to both improve the immune status of the body and to help control the tumor and prevent its spread.

Ayurvedic medicines can be used as additional therapy at any stage of conventional treatment, in order to improve the therapeutic response and the overall survival rate. All such patients should be under the regular care and supervision of an Oncology team.

Is prostate cancer recovery achievable? Survival rates quoted by doctors depend upon how far the cancer has spread in the body. Treatments typically offered by oncologists include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Yet cancer survivor and author, Karon Beattie, believes that conventional treatments are often ineffective. In her book, Natural Cancer Treatments That Work, Beattie cites studies that show there is no difference in the survival rates between prostate cancer patients who had surgery and the controls who did not and refers to medical reports that radical surgery for prostate cancer tend to spread the disease.

Beattie's book is a collection of over 350 alternative cancer treatments poorly recognised by mainstream doctors because the treatments are generally not patentable by drug companies. She claims that these treatments have enabled over 2,000 people to beat cancer.

Specifically in relation to prostate cancer, Beattie describes how an Australian chemist accidentally discovered a low-cost alkalizing powder to successfully treat his own cancer and help others with prostate cancer.

In addition, Beattie writes about a natural extract that dramatically helped a prostate cancer patient with rapidly progressive metastasis. A research team found that the extract suppressed solid tumor sarcoma by 96.7% in laboratory trials. This outcome seems astonishing for a little known treatment.

Beattie reports that Stanford University researchers found a common anti-biotic shrunk prostate cancers and showed an ability to prevent the initial spread of cancer.

In addition, Beattie provides 196 first hand accounts of people who beat prostate cancer and how they did it. If these stories are accurate, why are these treatments unrecognised by mainstream medicine?

Beattie believes that even though many of the treatments were discovered by respected scientists and researchers, drug companies have little interest in investing in human clinical trials because natural treatments are unpatentable and therefore unprofitable. She believes that cancer patients are being shortchanged and have to trawl the internet looking for treatments successfully used by thousands to beat their cancer.

People hoping for prostate cancer recovery will find these compelling stories difficult to ignore in their efforts to survive.

Prostate cancer is a specifically male cancer as it involves the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland is located between the bladder and rectum and is responsible for the production of seminal fluid. Prostate cancer treatment options depend on how advanced the cancer is.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States. Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty urinating and erectile dysfunction, although early prostate cancer may cause no symptoms at all. It is most frequent in men of fifty and is most often diagnosed in men in their seventies.

Diagnosis is through a physical examination or by blood tests. One of these blood tests is called the PSA test. PSA stands for prostate specific antigen, and it is this antigen that they are looking for in the blood. A confirmed case of prostate cancer will be confirmed by taking a biopsy.

If the cancer is contained within the prostate gland then there are two treatment options. The cancer can be treated with radiation therapy, which is the use of x-rays to kill cancer cells. The cancer can also be removed by surgery called radical prostatectomy.

A radical prostatectomy involves the removal of the entire prostate gland and usually the nearby lymph nodes, under general anaesthesia. The lymph nodes are then checked to see if the cancer has spread, known as metastasizing. There is a risk with prostate cancer of it metastasizing to other parts of the body, especially to the bones and the lymph nodes.

With both types of treatment there is a chance that the cancer will reoccur, however incidence of reoccurrence are less with the radical prostatectomy than with the radiation therapy. Careful consideration to the benefits and side effects of both treatments must be given so that you get the best treatment option for you.

If the cancer has metastasized beyond the prostate gland then hormone treatment can be given. Male hormones, called androgens, can be associated with accelerated growth of the tumor. Therefore if hormones are restricted the growth of the tumor can be slowed down. Androgens such as testosterone are produced in the testicles, so the testicles are sometimes removed as part of hormone treatment.

The final treatment for prostate cancer is called 'watchful waiting'. This involves regular check ups and monitoring by your doctor to keep a check on the tumor's growth. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and take blood tests, such as the PSA test.

With all types of treatment for prostate cancers the patient will need to weigh up the pros and cons and discuss the side effects of the different treatments with his doctor. A decision can then be taken on which course of treatment to take, or whether to undertake a period of 'watchful waiting' before deciding which of the prostate cancer treatment options to follow.

A prostate tumour is a lump created by an abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells. It can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Each year about 35 000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK.

The prostate is a gland that produces the liquid part of semen. It is about the size of a walnut and lies at the base of the bladder. The front of the prostate surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine form the bladder and out through the penis. The prostate gland increases slowly with age. Any change of the size of the prostate can narrow this tube, making it difficult to urinate.

Cancerous tumours can grow through the prostate and spread to other parts of the body (through the bloodstream or the lymph system) where they may grow and form secondary tumours. This is called metastasis. The symptoms of prostate cancer include difficulty in starting to pass urine, a weak and sometimes intermittent flow of urine, dribbling of urine before and after urinating, a frequent or urgent need to pass urine, pain when passing, and blood in the urine and/or erectile dysfunction.

The prostate cancer symptoms are similar to those produced by a common non-cancerous disease where the prostate becomes enlarged (benign prostatic hyperplasia). Inflammation of the prostate(prostatitis) can also give you these symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, it's very important you visit your doctor for advice. If prostate cancer is found early, it can often be cured. It is important to note, however, that most men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms at all.

If prostate cancer spreads to other parts of the body, other symptoms can develop. The most common site for prostate cancer to spread is to the lower back, pelvis and hips, causing bone pain and tenderness.

The cause for prostate cancer is not fully understood at present. The risk of getting prostate cancer gets higher as you get older. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer are over the age of 50. Men from the age of about 40 can be affected, but this is less common.

When you have close relatives who have had prostate cancer, you are also at higher risk. You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or brother has been diagnosed. The risk increases more if your relative was under the age of 60 when they were diagnosed, or if more than one relative has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. There has been a suggestion that the risk is also higher if several women in your family who have had breast cancer (you may have inherited a faulty gene which may increase risk of prostate cancer).

If you are Afro-Caribbean or Afro-American you are more at risk. African Caribbean men are three times more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than white men. Researchers are looking at what may be the cause of this increased risk, but diet and genes probably play an important part.

Researchers think diet may be responsible for the higher rates of prostate cancer seen in Western countries. The risk is higher if your diet is high in fat and if you are overweight. By reducing the amount of animal fat in your diet and eating more of certain fruits and vegetables, you can improve your overall health and may lower your risk of prostate cancer developing or spreading.

For purposes of diagnosis of prostate cancer, your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and will examine you. He or she may ask about your medical history and may do some tests or will refer you to a urologist (a doctor specialising in the urinary system). The examination will involve a digital rectal examination (insertion of a lubricated gloved finger into the rectum) and feel the prostate through the wall of the rectum. If there is prostate cancer it may feel harder than usual and/or knobbly. A blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA), which tests for the amount of PSA in the blood. PSA is a protein which is released by both normal and cancerous cells of the prostate. A high PSA level can indicate prostate cancer but can be found in other prostate diseases as well, like prostatitis. A sample of tissue called prostate biopsy will be taken and CT,MRI and bone scans to check how far the prostate cancer has spread.

Treatment may include: Active surveillance(cancer observed and treatment offered only when or if necessary, External Beam Radiotherapy - where radiation is used to kill cancer cells, Surgery - where the prostate is removed, Brachytherapy - where radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate High dose rate Brachytherapy - Where temporary sources of radiation are targeted directly at the prostate

The prostate gland is a reasonably small gland that is roughly the size of a walnut and sits under the bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate is an important gland which manufactures the liquid that helps to carry sperm.

One significant problem that can arise with the prostate is prostate cancer which is a serious and life-threatening condition that can be expected to strike about ten percent of all men and is the second commonest cause of cancer related death in men these days.

So exactly how does this particular disease start?

Cancer of the prostate starts as a malignant tumor in the prostate gland which, if left untreated, is likely to spread into neighboring tissue and organs and then into the lymph nodes and bone.

So what are the risk factors involved when it comes to contracting this form of cancer?

Over 70 percent of men suffering from this condition are over the age of 65.

Men who have close blood relatives such as a grandfather or father who have suffered from this condition are up to eleven times more likely to develop cancer of the prostate gland.

The death rate in men increases with weight and is especially high in men who are obese.

Caucasian men are more than twice as likely to suffer from this problem as are those of African decent.

Is there anything I can do to stop myself getting prostate cancer?

In reality there is nothing which you can do to stop yourself from running into this problem although some people are convinced that eating a healthy diet can lower your risk. At present there is little if any evidence to support this.

Diagnosing prostate cancer.

There are several tests which can be done including the prostate specific antigen test, the digital rectal examination and a biopsy.

The prostate specific antigen test is a blood test which detects the level of a prostate specific antigen in the bloodstream. High prostate specific antigen levels do not mean that you have prostate cancer but are a marker for possible problems that should be investigated further.

The digital rectal examination requires a doctor to wear a glove and insert a lubricated finger into the anus to feel the prostate for signs of enlargement or irregularity.

In the case of a biopsy your doctor will take several tissue samples from your prostate which will then be examined under a microscope for any signs of cancer cells.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the Western World, typically striking males over the age 40, with those in their sixties and onwards being most at risk. Prostate cancer falls into the category of a "silent killer" form of cancer, as this form of the disease rarely shows itself till it has spread out with the area of the gland. Once it has done it is much more difficult to treat, and can prove fatal.

The prostate gland is situated at the base of the bladder and covers the urethra, a tube that allows urine to flow from the male penis. In younger men, the prostate gland plays an important function in the producing the male sperm. The prostate gland in young and healthy men is walnut shaped and around the same size. However with age the prostate gland expands. Conventional medicine is largely unaware what causes prostate cancer, knowing only that it can be spread through testosterone, the male sex hormone.

What role does genetics play?

Genetics play a very major part in onset of prostate cancer, with African-American males being two and a half times more susceptible to pick up the disease than their Caucasian counterparts. Also males who have a relative diagnosed with cancer of the prostate are twice as likely to be diagnosed, and proportionally upwards.

While genetics seems to play a major role in the outset of prostate cancer it is far from being the only contributory factor. Overweight people seem to be particularly prone to being affected this form of cancer and due to an imbalance of antigen in their blood levels, also take a long time to be diagnosed with the disease.

Screening can save your life

In recent years, increase awareness of the risks of prostate cancer has led to a very beneficial practice, especially for males whose profiles appear to be pointing at the probability of the onset of prostate cancer. Males who fall into risk categories are invited for screenings, which are held at either their local health clinic or doctor's surgery. The screening is quick and painless and highly effective. If it is ascertained that cancer cells exist, yet still within the prostate gland, they can be very quickly removed often without the need for any form of invasive surgery. This is known as stage one or stage two cancer of the prostate gland, and statistics show that the screening process has reduced many of the cases to remain at this level, where survival rates are encouragingly high. If the cancer remains undetected for too long, it may well spread out with the prostate. If this occurs then a more invasive form of surgery needs to be carried out, inevitably followed by a course of chemotherapy, with all of its well known side effects.

Males should never shy away from their responsibilities of keeping their health in order and prostate gland cancer has now fallen into the category of a disease that while it is difficult to prevent can be treated.

As it is slow growing it is often the case that the patient will die of other things first and so the condition will be monitored as opposed to treated. If treatment is required then it is good to know that many methods such as radiation and hormonal therapy are often very successful.

Have you ever heard of Resveratrol? If you get spam email you probably have but may not know much more. But for men the good news is that Resveratrol and prostate cancer cures seem to be linked.

Resveratrol is a substance found in grapes. Have you heard that red wine is good for you? One of the reasons is that it has Resveratrol in it, from the grapes. And the Resveratrol prostate cancer link is getting stronger.

Studies are showing that a daily supplement of Resveratrol may be a protection against prostate cancer in men, according to the researchers at Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Resveratrol has other properties beneficial to us, including protection against heart disease and is a strong anti oxidant that helps reduce inflammation too. But it is the Resveratrol and prostate cancer link that is producing much excitement.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading cancers in men, similar to breast cancer in women.

Studies of the link between Resveratrol and prostate cancer have including injecting human prostate cancer cells into rodents and the use of Resveratrol to kill those cancer cells or to halt their growth. And it seems that although Resveratrol may be a good form of attack against cancer cells, it doesn't attack healthy cells.

With results like this it seems clear that the intake of Resveratrol every day could be useful for men approaching the prostate cancer age group, over about 50. And there is Resveratrol in most dark red wines, so it's a good reason to drink some wine.

However the worlds best supplement companies are now also working to produce supplements that contain a beneficial form of Resveratrol. One in particular is producing a highly effective total health supplement which contains not just Resveratrol but a total of 77 different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and various other substances known to be of benefit to the health in one daily supplement. It's cutting edge health science, and results have been impressive.

So if you're worried about prostate cancer, or are just looking for a solid way to protect yourself against a range of lifestyle related health problems, you may well find that taking daily health supplements that include Resveratrol may well be the best thing you ever did for your health.

But beware, there are many health and dietary supplements that are worthless. The worlds best dietary supplements are extremely effective, but there are plenty of scams. Find out more about the best dietary supplements on my website.

My grandfather had prostate cancer. Actually, he still does. I can remember him telling me about how when he went in for radiation, the technicians would get him all set up and then bolt from the room before they were zapped too. It kind of makes you wonder how something that is so dangerous that people would run from the room is supposed to heal your body. Although, like I mentioned above, he still has it. It's just been kept at bay for the past fifteen years or so. He goes in for a bi-yearly needle that costs $1500 a pop. Does that sound like an effective prostate cancer treatment?

It sure doesn't sound so great to me. Sure, he's still alive which is wonderful, but wouldn't a more effective treatment be to just get rid of it altogether with something that won't cause harm to other parts of the body?

And that is the main problem when it comes to conventional medicine's approach to prostate cancer treatments. They are ineffective, and all cause harm to other parts of the body. Pumping deadly poison into your body or blasting it with radiation can hardly be considered "healing." To really find the most effective prostate cancer treatments it's best to get out of the lab and back to nature. There are literally hundreds of gentle, non-toxic treatments that will actually get rid of your prostate cancer without harming any other parts of your body.

All I can say is that if you're really interested in the most effective prostate cancer treatments don't let yourself be led astray. Effective means killing cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Effective means getting rid of your cancer permanently rather than being strung along for years and years. The answers are out there. The choice is yours. All you have to do is take action.

If you or someone you care about is dealing with any type of cancer and are looking for the most effective treatments available, go take a look here: http://killcancernow.blogspot.com

When it comes to green tea and prostate cancer prevention, health experts agree that it may help. If you are looking for a treatment, your best source for information is a doctor of naturopathic medicine or an ND. They are aware of standard treatments, as well as complementary and alternative treatments. Many men seek these kinds of treatments on their own, but the greatest degree of success is seen when an ND is consulted and their advice is followed.

Prostate cancer has the second highest incidence of all cancers in males, worldwide, but incidence and mortality from the disease are highest among men living in affluent, industrialized societies. Because of this, it is obvious that environmental factors, including dietary factors, play a role in the development, progression and severity of the disease.

In some populations, where the beverage is favored over others, there is a lower incidence of several different cancers. That is what instigated the studies of green tea and prostate cancer prevention.

The active component in the tea leaves are believed to be catechins, a kind of antioxidant. Antioxidants of all kinds have proven to be beneficial for slowing tumor cell growth in the laboratory.

A diet that is rich in antioxidants may help prevent cancers of all kinds, because antioxidants prevent free radicals from causing the mutation of cellular DNA that leads to cancerous growths. Most of us know about the common antioxidants; vitamins A, C and E. But, practically every plant in the world contains unique antioxidants, with varying potency. There are even some amino acids that have potent antioxidant activity.

If you wanted to include all of them in your diet every day, it would be very difficult. Some of the plants are not generally eaten; marigolds, saw palmetto, red clover, nettle root, passion flower, algae and gingko biloba are examples. The solution is supplementation. It is an easy way to get vitamins, minerals, amino acids and plant extracts, without completely changing your diet.

Claims concerning green tea and prostate cancer prevention are considered verifiable by the US Food and Drug Administration. But, why settle for a single-ingredient supplement, when so much more is available.

There are specially formulated men's supplements that contain all of the extracts mentioned above, along with green tea extract and your daily requirements for the standard vitamins and minerals. It just takes a little effort to find a good supplement, because most of the brands on the market are just not that well-designed.

In addition to green tea and prostate cancer prevention, the FDA allows claims concerning breast cancer prevention, as well. Basically, the plant is good for everyone, as long as they don't drink too much. The caffeine content can cause problems. Health care professionals agree that drinking green tea instead of coffee is healthier, because the caffeine content is lower and the nutritive value is much higher.

If you continue to learn about green tea and prostate cancer prevention, you will find that there are lots of things that you can do to reduce your risk. It is well worth your effort to learn more. If you have two minutes to spare, please take a look at my website now.

For all men, once we reach the age of 40, the risk of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), more commonly referred to as the enlargement of the prostate gland, increases. -- As much as we would like to dismiss the reality, we cannot. We can, however, have hope due to the incredible advancements in BPH treatment such as Green Light Laser Prostate treatment (sometimes referred to as PVP, or photovaporization of the prostate).

With this new and highly-effective method of treating BPH, men worldwide can now enjoy a much more-effective treatment than previous laser methods. In addition, Green Light Laser Prostate treatment carries fewer risks and complications than previously-used BPH treatments.

The focus of this article will highlight these three powerful benefits in closer detail; thus shedding new light on an age-old condition.

A More-Effective Treatment:

When compared to other laser-based BPH treatments, such as Interstitial laser therapy (Indigo) and Holmium laser therapy (Lumenis), PVP treatment is much more effective due to the increased power of the laser being used (120 watts).

This increase in power allows surgeons to literally vaporize the excess prostate tissue obstructing the bladder.

Lower-powered lasers are not as effective at removing as much of the enlarged prostate tissues and are therefore less effective.

Fewer Risks than Other Treatments:

Another reason to opt for Green Light Laser Prostate treatment is that it brings with it far fewer risks often associated with other forms of treatment.

By using the laser technology, risks such as intra-operative and post-operative bleeding, having to use a catheter for more than 24 hours, and post-operative bladder-neck contraction are virtually eliminated.

Most of the above-mentioned surgical risks are commonly associated with other forms of BPH treatment such as microwave and TURP treatments.

Fewer Complications and Side Effects than Other Treatments:

In addition to having fewer overall surgical risks, PVP treatment has also been noted to have much fewer post-operative complications and side effects.

Some of the most common complications attributed to other forms of BPH treatment are longer hospital stays (1-3 days in most cases); retrograde ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and incontinence have been witnessed to a much lesser degree with PVP treatment.

For example, most PVP patients spend less than 1 day in the hospital, and even though some the above-mentioned complications can occur, they are the lesser rather than the norm.

In Conclusion:

It's often been said that every man will experience BPH at some point in life. The question remains, however, on what type of treatment each will choose.

The facts are in. And Green Light Laser Prostate treatment is the most advanced, effective, and offers the least amount of risk of all other BPH treatments.

Prostate cancer is without a doubt the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. If it is detected early and confined to the gland, then the prognosis is excellent. The prostate is a small gland that is located near the bladder in men. There is basically two types prostate cancer. One type is gentle and it has minimal effects. The other type can spread throughout the body, if not treated, and cause significant damage. It is important for prostate cancer to be detected early so the appropriate treatment can be utilized.

Prostate Cancer is usually a slow progressing type of cancer and the symptoms sometimes take years to develop. If the cancer is detected at an early stage, it is possible that there will be no noticeable symptoms. On the other hand, some men will experience some or all of the symptoms that can indicate that prostate cancer is present in their body. Sometimes the first symptoms can affect the lower back, hip or pelvic pain indicating the cancer may have has already spread. It is very important to understand that with either a benign enlargement of the prostate gland (non-cancerous) or malignancy (cancer), the symptoms are similar. These noticeable symptoms might include:

• Frequent urination, especially during the night

• Experiencing or having difficulty starting urination

• A weak or interrupted urine flow

• Discomfort, pain or a burning sensation during urination

• A difficulty in obtaining or maintaining an erection

• Moderate to intense pain during ejaculation

• Traces of blood in the urine or in semen

• Moderate to intense recurring pain or stiffness in the low back, hips, or upper thighs

It is also very common that men over 50 years of age will have an enlarged prostate gland due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that is a non-cancerous condition.

If you notice or experience any of the symptoms it is imperative that you see your doctor, who will diagnose the problem. Usually, in most instances involving an enlargement of the prostate it is not due to prostate cancer and proper medical treatment can deal with it effectively.

The actual symptoms of prostate cancer are caused when the growth of cells, benign or malignant, begin pressing or pushing against the urethra, which is a thin tube connecting the bladder to the penis. When this happens, you can experience painful urination or ejaculation, notice blood in the urine or semen, and pain in the lower back, hips or thighs.

Some of the symptoms can be caused by infections, but you should see your doctor and be checked. The doctor will do a DRE or digital rectal examination. It is very simple. The doctor will insert a lubricated gloved finger into the rectum to check for an enlarged prostate. Some doctors seem to have incredibly long fingers when they do this. Following this exam, they usually do a blood test to check the PSA (protein specific antigen) and determine if the level is within normal limits or if it is elevated. Depending on the results of these two tests, other tests or procedures maybe necessary.

The PSA and DRE tests, unfortunately, are not 100 % accurate and conclusive, but they do give the doctor some indication if a problem exists. Some of the important things that must be considered are: your current age, your general overall health and your lifestyle. If you are under 50 and are diagnosed with prostate cancer, it could shorten your life, if is not detected early enough. On the other hand, you are over 65 or in relatively poor health, then it is possible that prostate cancer might never become a serious problem to you, because of its slow-growing nature.

The American Cancer Society strongly recommends that men begin to have both the PSA blood test and digital rectal examination every year after turning 50. If you are at a higher risk, because of a family history, the testing should begin at 45.At the present time, the exact causes of prostate cancer are not clear, but there seems to be certain factors that may affect or increase your chances of developing it. Specifically, a family history of prostate cancer and a very fat-rich diet.

If the event the cancer has spread from the prostate or if it is thought that it will spread, then surgical removal of the prostate is usually performed with small parts of the lymphatic system near the gland. With the advancement nerve sparing surgical techniques, this type of surgery eliminates much of the nerve damage that would prevent you from experiencing any sexual problems or having control over urination. This helps ensure that both the effects on function and quality of life are minimized.

The medical and surgical advancements in prostate cancer surgery now mean that the surgeons are able to successfully remove the prostate gland without causing the once problematic damage to the nerves, which was a major problem in the past. In addition, newer techniques in radiotherapy mean that higher doses can be safely and more efficiently targeted on the prostate. This kills more of the cancer cells and requires fewer treatments. Keep in mind, that sometimes, in the case of older men, the best treatment for prostate cancer is no treatment, especially when it is determined that surgery, radiation or chemotherapy may cause more harm than good.

There is a new treatment method known as prostate brachytherapy. The doctor may choose either permanent seed implantation, where injected radioactive seeds into the prostate will give a low dose of cancer killing radiation over a timeframe of several weeks or months. The injected seeds will remain permanently in the prostate gland.

The other alternative with brachytherapy involves the placement of very tiny plastic catheters within the prostate and then delivering radiation treatments in a series, through the catheters.

It is encouraging to know that the prognosis for sufferers of prostate cancer has improved considerably in recent years. In the last twenty years or so, the survival rate for all of the prostate cancer stages has increased remarkably. Men are able to live significantly longer after they were diagnosed. These facts are the result of early detection programs, an increase in public awareness of prostate cancer symptoms and the practicing or changing to healthier lifestyles.

Prostate cancer, the male equivalent of breast cancer, has many known causes. Before you can eliminate prostate cancer you need to know these causes. To successfully become free of the problem, doesn't it make sense to identify the factors which caused it in the first place and remove those causes and then allow the body to heal itself, which it will do? It is very rare for prostate cancer like all other cancers to have a single cause. It is more typically triggered by a combination of the following; nutritional deficiencies, the toxins in your environment, our sedentary lifestyle and emotional conflict.

Known foods that contribute to prostate cancer are a diet high in animal fat, the consumption of processed meat or pressed meats which contain the additives sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite. It's also caused by our low consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables.

1 - Fresh fruit and vegetables are man's natural food and all contain phytonutrients which have cancer fighting properties. For instance research has found that both tomatoes and broccoli contain phytonutrients that are beneficial in both fighting cancer and keeping us cancer free. Their benefits are said to be even greater when eaten together.

2 - The chemicals we use daily do cause us health problems, many of them have not been tested for safety and none have been tested for long term reaction like cancer. We are surrounded by them as we breath them in as in exhaust gases and industry pollution, we apply them to our skin as in personal care products and our body rapidly absorbs them. They are also in our processed foods as additives, such as food colourings, and most food colourings are from artificial sources.

3 - Our bodies were built to be physically active and we'll inevitably pay the price if we neglect this basic and fundamental need. The way exercise is related to cancer is, it boosts our all important immune system and cancer is simply a disease of a weak immune system. Our immune system doesn't have a pump like the heart but relies on muscular activity to circulate the fluid within the immune system. The immune system defends the body against bacteria, viruses and other foreign invaders including cancer cells.

4 - Emotional stress can have a devastating effect on the immune system which can bring on all cancers, not just prostate cancer. This type of stress is usually causes by major problems in one's life like a financial crises or even marital conflict. Don't be afraid to seek the help from someone experienced in counselling for these types of problems.

5 - Remember, prostate cancer is not causes by bad luck, it is caused by bad management, the more you choose to get involved, the greater a difference you can make to the outcome of your disease. It is essential that you base your decisions for your treatment on sound knowledge so in the end you will restore your health. Prostate cancer is an entirely preventable and curable disease.

Through the years there have been a number of studies conducted to determine the connection between prostate cancer and alcohol. One such study was done at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center which is located in Seattle. In this test 1,456 men answered a dietary questionnaire that was detailed in nature and they underwent a personal evaluation. These men were between the ages of forty and sixty-four years old.

The scientists collected all the information they could that would even slightly influence the risk of getting this type of cancer. Information included age, height, weight, race, family history, occupation, lifestyle, sexual history, caloric intake and even marital status. Their complete medical history was reviewed and then a detailed account of their alcohol consumption was assessed.

What Was Found In the Study?

In this study the scientists went a step further than they have with other studies by separating the different types of alcohol that were consumed. Data revealed that men who consumed more than thirty-five beers a week for about eight years or more actually increased their risk of cancer of the prostate. However, men who drank wine reduced their risk.

Further studies showed that red wine was contributed the most benefits for reducing risk factors. In fact, it was determined that men who consumed somewhere between four and seven glasses of red wine could reduce their risk of prostate cancer by as much as fifty-two percent. Red wine also appeared to help protect against other aggressive or advanced types of cancers.

Why Does Red Wine Reduce Your Risk?

Why does red wine make such a difference? The truth is that no one really knows, but there are some theories.

For instance, red wine contains flavonoids and resveratrol, which both contain antioxidant properties. It appears that some of these properties counterbalance androgens, which are the hormones that stimulate the prostate glands. Tests show that resveratrol can induce apoptosis which is a process that kills the prostate cancer cells. The flavonoids seem to reduce the PSA production of prostate cancer cells, which actually suggest that a decrease in cellular activity is taking place.

Very seldom will a doctor recommend that you drink alcohol to enhance your health and for good reason. Many people could use this as an excuse to become an alcoholic and excessive alcohol use could cause other serious medical conditions.

It's also important to remember that this was just one study and more need to be conducted so results can be compared. Considering the results of this study, however, it's probably reasonable to assume that a favorable link between red wine and prostate cancer will be confirmed in the future.

A common concern amongst prostate cancer patients who are deciding on the right treatment for them is about the possibility of impotence. Becoming impotent is a very stressful thing for any man, and it is definitely something you need to be aware of before starting any treatment. As always you should discuss these matters with your doctor or medical professional who'll be able to give you advice specifically for your personal needs and feelings.

Can Prostate Cancer Treatment Cause Impotence?

Some prostate cancer survivors who have had treatment (usually via radiation therapy) do find themselves without the sexual functionality that they had before, that is true. While sometimes this is a temporary problem and doesn't affect everyone, it can also be a long term condition.

Is It Just Radiation Therapy That Can Cause Impotence?

Radiation therapy works by killing the cancer cells, but there are often side effects due to damaging of non-cancerous cells. However impotence can also be caused by other forms of treatment in some cases. To find out the exact side effects of a treatment you should always talk it through thoroughly with your doctor.

Is Impotence Permanent?

There have been limited successes with some medications that aim to reverse the effects of impotence, but the most promising by far is a drug called Cialis. Again, this is something you should contact your doctor about if you think it may help you.

Impotence is a real problem amongst prostate cancer survivors, and should be discussed with your doctor before committing to any treatment. Many men who do survive prostate cancer treatment regain their sexual functionality, but not in all cases.

In vitro studies of resveratrol and prostate cancer were promising. In animal models, resveratrol prostate cancer preventative activity has not been seen. It has been shown to prevent the development of skin cancer in animals exposed to carcinogens.

Orally, it has been ineffective against lung cancer and leukemia, but effective against throat, stomach, intestinal and colon tumors. When injected into the lung, it did slow the growth of the tumor. It appeared to help prevent breast cancer, but had no effect on existing tumors.

In order for studies to continue concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer treatment, researchers believe that they will need to find a way to get the compound to the tumor. They believe that it only has a positive affect on tumors that it can come into direct contact with. In other words, simply injecting it into the bloodstream or giving it orally is not effective.

As far as resveratrol prostate cancer prevention goes, it is not likely that there will be additional research. Right now, most of the studies are focusing on the anti-diabetic or blood-sugar lowering capabilities of the compound. Some small studies are being conducting concerning its use as an anti-obesity drug, as well.

In animal studies, it has been shown to counteract the effects of a high fat diet, although exactly "how" it does that is not clear, but it has some effect on the genes within the cell's DNA. So, there may be many advantages to supplementation, but resveratrol prostate cancer preventative activity may not be among them. Green tea and grape seed extracts, however, may be advantageous for that purpose.

Instead of focusing on resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention, you may look for alternatives. Green tea is one of the supplements that are allowed to bear the health claim of helping to prevent cancers of the breasts and the prostates. Other important botanicals and nutrients for men's health include Tribulus, damiana, L-arginine, gingko biloba, corn silk extract, Chrysin, saw palmetto and lycopene, as well as omega 3 fatty acids.

Cancers of all types are caused by free radicals, chronic inflammation and exposure to carcinogens. Normal cells become mutated and multiply spreading to the surrounding tissue and eventually forming a tumor. Resveratrol prostate cancer studies were initiated because it has unique antioxidant activity. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals.

Green tea, Chrysin and lycopene have antioxidant activity and they are natural anti-inflammatories. Omega-3 fatty acids are also natural inflammation fighters. So, even though the animal model studies concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer were not promising, there is hope for prevention and treatment.

As the standard treatments cause numerous side effects, many people are choosing alternative treatments. That's one reason that animal studies were conducted concerning the potential of resveratrol prostate cancer treatment and the reason that those studies are likely to continue.

In the meantime, the best suggestion is to consult a doctor of naturopathic medicine. Many of them have programs designed specifically for men with this condition. Perhaps, as time goes by, we'll learn more about resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention. If you have a minute to spare, please take a look at my website now.

What It Is

Prostate cancer is when cancerous cells form in the prostate causing a tumour. Once the cancerous cells have formed, it is then possible for them to travel away from the prostate to affect other parts of the body. The prostate is a gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located below the bladder. For this reason, prostate cancer only affects men.

Causes of Prostate Cancer

Although the exact causes of prostate cancer are not fully understood, there are a number of factors that increase the likelihood of a man developing the cancer.

The most common factor is age. Although younger men can be affected, the disease is far more common in those aged over 45 or 50. Besides age, the chances of getting prostate cancer increase if you have any female relatives that have had breast cancer, any male relatives that have had prostate cancer or if you are from a particular ethnic group, such as African or Caribbean.

However, lifestyle also has an influence, and for those who are overweight or have a diet which is high in fat, the chances of developing the cancer are increased.

Symptoms

There are numerous symptoms for men suffering from prostate cancer that we are aware of, although all of them can also be symptoms of less serious conditions. However, if you suffer from any of these then we would highly recommend a trip to the doctor.

One of the most common symptoms that we know of is a frequent need to urinate, especially if this occurs at night. If the flow of urine becomes interrupted, if there is any burning sensation or you find it difficult to start urinating, these could also represent possible symptoms.

Other symptoms include erectile dysfunction, experiencing a painful ejaculation or finding blood in the semen or urine, although this is quite rare. Pain in the lower back can also be a sign of the condition, as well as pain in the hips or the upper thighs.

Conventional Treatments

Conventional treatments for prostate cancer can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, but these all depend upon the health and age of the patient and the progression of the disease.

A radical prostatectomy is the most common form of surgery, and involves removing the prostate and the surrounding tissue. This is usually the best cause of action for patients where the cancer has not spread.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can both have unpleasant side effects, and hormone therapy works by blocking the role of testosterone which helps the cancer to grow, which can only work to slow the spread of the disease rather than offering a cure.

Cryotherapy and ultrasound are also possibilities, as is a more extreme form of surgery known as an orchidectompy, which involves the removal of the testicles to prevent the formation of testosterone.

Alternative Treatments

The conventional treatments for prostate cancer can produce very unpleasant side effects, and so many people opt for alternative treatments instead.

One of the most successful types of alternative treatment is known as Bio-Photonic Light Treatment. This is a completely natural treatment, and aims to restore the energy that has been lost in each of the cells affected by the cancer. It works through directing UV rays right at the cells, restoring the patient's natural energy levels to increase the chances of recovery.

Another successful alternative treatment is a special formula known as Formula MVA. The immune system is often badly affected by the spread of the cancerous cells, and this formula aims to boost the immune system using a combination of powerful natural substances. Containing Palladium, Acetyl Cystiene and Vitamins B1, B2 and B12 amongst others, the formula gives the body a huge boost, further enhancing the possibility of fighting the disease.

High Body-Temperature Therapy is another successful technique that aims to mimic the conditions of a fever in the body in order to destroy the harmful cells. This natural process works by using a specially-designed infrared sauna, which produces a type of sweat from the body which is packed full of toxins, far more than occur in normal sweat. This literally works by flushing the toxins out of the body, leading to a much greater chance of recovery.

All of these treatments can be undertaken alone or in combination, but one that is often used alongside other treatments is EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques. Cancer is often a result of a traumatic or stressful event in a person's past, and EFT aims to balance the meridian through completely non-invasive treatment. It aims to restore balance to the body and reverse the process that has led to the formation of the cancer, thereby increasing the chances of a recovery.

After the initial treatment, there still exists a very remote likelihood of prostate cancer recurrence in some cases. The disease is ordinarily cured if it has not spread outside the gland, and if this is so, the most probable treatment is radical prostatectomy (removal of the gland by surgery).

To monitor whether the treatment has been effective, most surgeons recommend prostate PSA testing once every 3 to 4 months after surgery in the first 2 years, and then once every 6 months in the next five years. After this, testing can be done once a year as chances of prostate cancer recurrence are very small.

So the best way to detect whether cancer cells continue to grow in the body is by the PSA (prostate specific antigen test ) blood test. The doctor will determine for certain whether the rise in PSA levels is due to cancer cells and their exact location. Are they in the lymph nodes outside the prostate or in the pelvic region or in the bones? This testing is what will determine what treatment to then apply. In this case it is normal to use external beam therapy.

Tests for recurrence after radiotherapy follow much the same pattern. Again a continued rise in PSA levels would normally indicate a recurrence. This suggesting further treatment, and often hormone therapy is used.

But take heart, even with rising PSA levels the doctor may still decide that the prostate cancer recurrence does not pose any serious threat or is slow growing enough to put it under watchful waiting for sometime before any further treatment becomes necessary.

Not all prostate cancer recurrence pose a serious threat. For further information on how to check for any recurrence and other resources, visit Cancer of Prostate website

If you are reading this article and is middle aged, it is pretty safe to say that you have, at some point, heard of prostate. In fact, you've probably heard a LOT of things about the prostate and the problems associated with it. It's easy to be completely overwhelmed and confused by all the information, medical terms, and "take caution" articles out there. If so, then reading this article will help you understand more about prostate health, wellness, and longevity and answer some of the common confusions around it!

Let's first start by explaining what the prostate is: The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in the male reproductive system, located just below the bladder, which surrounds part of the urethra (the canal that empties the bladder). On an average, the prostate is made up of about 30% muscular tissue, while the remaining 70% are glandular tissues.

This small (but vital) gland plays a huge role in the daily life and sexual health of all men. The main function of a man's prostate is not only to store, but also to secrete a somewhat alkaline fluid that forms part of semen (this fluid helps to prolong the "lifespan" of sperm). Also, the prostates' smooth muscle structure, aids in its other primary function - helping to expel semen during ejaculation.

Now that we understand what the prostate is, where it is located, and what it does... let's talk why it is important and how to keep prostate healthy. By the age of 40, most men will experience prostate growth - this is not uncommon - but if the prostate grows too large it can cause problems such as BPH and other more serious conditions.

Of these conditions BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) is the most common and affects almost 50-75% of men over the age of 50. Symptoms of BPH include: frequent urgency to urinate, difficulty or painful urination, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. But what causes BPH? Quite simply - BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate.

An enlarged prostate happens when prostate cells start to multiply. The multiplication of these cells exerts pressure on the urethra - the "exit tube" for urine and semen. This pressure creates a narrowing of the urethra, which in turn causes the bladder to contract more vigorously for urine and semen to exit. Eventually, the bladder becomes overly sensitive and results in annoying, frequent, and at times, painful trips to the bathroom. Above all, it can also make your sex life, extremely troublesome!

If you find yourself suffering from any of these symptoms then you may need to take it seriously! There are several all-natural prostate vitamins that can aid in alleviating these symptoms and difficulties associated with it. The powerful herbal product, Saw Palmetto is a great 100% safe berry that appears to be effective than popular man-made drugs and medications.

Studies also show that the effects of Beta-Sitosterol (the ultimate prostate fuel), plus two breakthrough super phytonutrients: Lycopene and Soy Isoflavone, also provide support for proper prostate nutrition and urinary function- all while rejuvenating and energizing your sex drive too!

Another key reason to pay attention to your prostate's health and nutrition is because, for some men, prostate symptoms aggravates more than BPH. In these circumstances, it is recommended to consult a physician and determine prostate PSA (prostate-specific antigen).

PSA... one of those terms you've probably heard before... but aren't quite sure of what it is or how it related to prostate. Well, here's how: PSA is a protein, produced by the prostate and released into the bloodstream. The amount of PSA in the blood typically increases as the prostates size increases. However, these levels can also be elevated due to injury, a DRE (digital rectal exam), sexual activity, or even BPH. A simple blood test is all you need to determine your PSA.

Now that we've discussed what the prostate is, where it is located, and some of the warning signs of prostate health trouble, your prostate health and wellness questions, as well as several key steps to maintaining prostate longevity... Don't become a victim to your prostate! It doesn't have to be a ticking time bomb that just keeps growing larger. Take action now! The sooner you take control of your prostate health and nutrition, the likelier you are to take Control of your Life, eradicate the pain and embarrassment of prostate health troubles and Rejuvenate your Sex drive.

Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancer amongst men, particularly men who are aged 50 and over. It is not known exactly what causes this type of cancer but it develops when the cell division process in the prostate gland goes wrong and the cells start to multiply in a rapid and out of control way. This ultimately causes a prostate tumour to form which then starts to destroy the surrounding cells and can spread to other areas of the body. Whilst in the worst cases prostate cancer can prove fatal there are a number of treatment options available and in this article I will be discussing four of these.

1) BRACHYTHERAPY:- This treatment involves radioactive seeds being placed inside your prostate gland. Once they have been inserted in to your prostate they stay there for the rest of your life but they become less and less radioactive as time passes by. Brachytherapy is thought to be as effective as surgery for treating prostate cancer but it does come with some unpleasant side effects. First, this type of treatment can cause a temporary burning sensation when urinating. It can also lead to impotence with approximately 30% of men made impotent by brachytherapy.

2) HORMONE THERAPY:- This type of treatment involves using drugs to regulate the production of testosterone in your body. Prostate cancer relies on testosterone for growth so by stopping the body producing this hormone you can slow the cancer's growth. Hormone therapy is not an effective treatment for all prostate cancers but it can help reduce many of the undesirable symptoms associated with this disease.

3) SURGERY:- Surgery is one of the most effective treatments available for this type of cancer. The most common type of surgery used to treat this disease is radical prostatectomy which involves the whole prostate being removed. Although surgery is very effective you are likely to experience side effects following this type of treatment. Approximately 70% of men experience some kind of erectile dysfunction post surgery whilst 40% experience minor incontinence and 2% experience major incontinence.

4) CHEMOTHERAPY:- This type of treatment involves using medications that kill or shrink cancerous cells. Chemotherapy is generally not as effective as the above treatments and is most commonly used before surgery (to shrink any cancer cells and make the surgery easier to perform) or after surgery (to kill of any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of the prostate cancer coming back). Many people who participate in chemotherapy experience a number of unpleasant side effects including hair loss and a small appetite. However, these side effects usually disappear when the course of treatment ends.

Prostate cancer is one of the most widespread forms of cancer amongst men. However, it can be treated. I hope this article has given you a good summary of the different treatment types available. If you are considering getting treatment then speak to your doctor first. They will be able to provide you with a qualified, professional opinion and choose the treatment that is right for you.

Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Prostate cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

With the exception of non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most widespread form of cancer amongst men. Approximately 35,000 men contract this disease each year. It develops when the cells in the prostate start to multiply in a rapid and uncontrollable way. Whilst no one is sure exactly why the cells of the prostate start to do this there are a number of risk factors that are strongly associated with this type of cancer. In this article I am going to be discussing three of these risk factors in greater detail.

1) AGE:- Prostate cancer generally affects men who are aged 50 plus and is uncommon in younger men. Around two in every three diagnoses are in men who are aged 70 and over. It is not known why age is such a major risk factor and why this disease does not affect younger men. The most logical suggestion is that as you get older your prostate cells have replicated more and more times. Therefore, there is a greater chance of something going wrong during cell replication and causing cancerous growths.

2) DIET:- There is some evidence to suggest that your diet can influence your prostate cancer risk. Eating lots of animal fats and calcium is thought to increase your chances of contracting this diseases. On the other hand eating lots of fruits, vegetables and foods that are high in lycopene (found in tomatoes) and selenium (found in meat, fish and eggs) is thought to reduce your risk of developing this type of cancer.

3) FAMILY HISTORY:- Your family history influences your risk of developing prostate cancer in a number of ways. If your father or brother developed this condition then this increases your chances of contracting it too, particularly if it happened before they were 60 years old. On the female side of the family, if your mother or sister have previously contracted breast cancer then your chances of getting prostate cancer increase as well, especially if they contracted breast cancer before reaching 40. It is not known why family history has such a significant bearing but it has been suggested that a specific, inherited gene which has not yet been identified could be responsible.

Unfortunately, the majority of risk factors for this type of cancer are beyond our control. If after reading this article you think your chances of developing prostate cancer are particularly high you should go and see your doctor and start taking preventative action now. Whilst it is one of the most common types of cancer amongst males less than 3% of men die as a result of this condition. I hope this article has given you an insight in to your own personal risk but remember even if you are a high risk for the disease the chances of survival are still high.

Prostate cancer affects around 35,000 males each year and mainly affects older men. Whilst it may not always be possible to identify the signs of prostate cancer there are a few things you should look out for. In this article I will be discussing three of the potential prostate cancer symptoms.

Around 35,000 men contract prostate cancer each year with the majority of diagnoses being in men aged 50 and over. It develops when the normal process of cell division goes wrong and the prostate cells start to multiply in a rapid and uncontrollable way. No one knows exactly what causes this to happen but age, family history, diet and ethnicity are all thought to have an influence. When a prostate tumour does develop it often presses against the urethra (the vessel that your body uses to excrete urine) leading to a number of unpleasant symptoms. In this article I will be discussing three of these potential prostate cancer symptoms.

1) BLOOD IN THE URINE:- As the prostate tumour presses against the urethra it may cause damage which results in bleeding. This blood can then come out in the urine. Any internal bleeding should not be ignored. If you notice any blood in the urine then you should go and see your doctor immediately. Even if the bleeding is not being caused by prostate cancer it is a very strong indicator that something is not right. Your doctor will be able to perform the necessary tests and determine the cause of any bleeding.

2) DIFFICULTY WHEN URINATING:- When the prostate tumour pushes against the urethra this often causes the vessel to squash together. This can restrict the flow of urine through the urethra and make it quite difficult to urinate. Problems can include difficulty starting the flow of urine, starting and stopping whilst urinating and a feeling of urgency when the need to urinate arises. If you notice any of the above problems or have any other difficulty urinating you should go see your doctor right away. There are many possible reasons that you may experience difficulty urinating but your doctor will be able to let you know whether any of the problems you are experiencing are related to prostate cancer.

3) PAIN IN THE LOWER BACK, HIPS AND GROIN:- Since the prostate is located around the lower back, hips and groin it can cause pain in these areas as it grows larger and larger. It can also cause pain in the groin when urinating. Although pain in these areas does not necessarily mean that you have prostate cancer you should still go see your doctor and get it checked out. Unexplained pain is a sign that something is wrong and your doctor will be able to let you know why you are experiencing it.

I hope this article has given you an insight in to the potential prostate cancer symptoms. Whilst the above problems are not necessarily a sign that you have cancer they do indicate that something is not quite right. Your doctor will be able to tell you the reason behind the above symptoms and put you on a relevant treatment plan.

Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Prostate cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

With the exception of non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer amongst men. It affects around 35,000 men each year with around 66% of these diagnoses being amongst men who are aged 50 and over. It begins when the prostate cells start to multiply in a rapid and uncontrollable way leading to the formation of a cancerous tumour. This can then lead to a number of undesirable symptoms including difficulty urinating properly and pain in the hips, groin and lower back. If you suspect that you may have prostate cancer for the above reasons or for any other reason you should go see your doctor for further testing. In this article I will be discussing four of the tests that they may use.

1) PROTEIN SPECIFIC ANTIGEN (PSA) TEST:- Your prostate produces a protein called PSA. A PSA test quite simply measures the level of PSA that is in your blood. A small amount of PSA is normal but high levels of blood PSA are often linked with prostate cancer. The PSA test is not 100% accurate because other factors such as your age can influence PSA levels.

2) DIGITAL RECTAL EXAM (DRE):-This prostate cancer test involves your doctor placing a gloved finger inside your rectum. They will then feel your prostate gland to see if it has changed shape or increased in size. The DRE also has its limitations because a cancerous prostate may still feel normal from the outside.

3) TRANS RECTAL ULTRASOUND SCAN (TRUS):- This test uses sound waves to build an image of your prostate. Your doctor can then use this picture to measure your prostate and see if it looks abnormal. Again the TRUS is not the perfect prostate cancer test because a normal sized, normal shaped prostate can still turn out to be cancerous.

4) BIOPSY:- This test involves a tissue sample being taken from the prostate and examined in the laboratory. The laboratory tests can then be used to determine if the cells in the prostate are cancerous. Although a biopsy is one of the best prostate cancer tests available there are instances when a prostate biopsy comes back negative despite cancerous cells being present.

Prostate cancer affects 35,000 men every year. Therefore, if you have any reason to believe you may have contracted this disease go and see your doctor right away and ask them about getting yourself tested. Whilst each of the tests has its limitations, collectively they provide a good indicator as to whether your prostate has become cancerous.

Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Prostate cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

My name is Bob. Why go through the pain of medical treatment with prostate cancer? I believe you and I were put on this earth to help other people. If you do a good turn for someone, someone else will do a good turn for you. It also works the other way. You get what you give, good, bad or indifferent. With that said I would like to tell you my story as it may be of some help to you or someone you love.

I have had prostate cancer for 18 years; I am still "fit" without having any of the doctors medicine or treatment. I have kept it under control with herbs and natural products. I should state, I am not a doctor, I am only relating what has happened to me and what action I have taken to keep it under control. I should also say that I have about 40 books on the subject. What I have found or learned has come from other people through books and personal contact, coupled with my own personal experiences.

My first recommendation is, if or when you are diagnosed with any cancer, do not let it worry you. Worry never helped any situation. In fact, many people die from FEAR (that word stands for False Evidence Appearing Real). God never made any junk. He gave us an immune system to take care of any disease that we might get. The only proviso is that our immune system must not become overloaded with toxins.

My second recommendation is to eliminate as many toxins from your system as possible. Stop taking in toxins (cut out junk food) and eliminate processed foods. Eat fresh, organic and unprocessed foods whenever possible.

My third recommendation is to get rid of parasites from your body. All people with cancer have parasites in their body. Kill the parasites and you have killed the cancer. Killing the parasites is an ongoing process, so attack the problem from several directions. There are a lot of natural things that will kill cancer cells without harming good cells or your immune system. In fact, some things enhance your immune system. Remember you must make changes, if you keep doing what you have been doing and expect to have a change, you are foolish. Even when you find something that works, it may only work for a while. Your body makes changes when new substances are added to your system. We are all different, but you will find one day that what you have been doing stops working. Be vigilant! Keep looking for something else that will make a difference.

Ask yourself a question, does it make any logical sense to poison all the cells in your body, (good and bad) and depress your immune system at the same time? Chemo and radiation do just that!

With prostate cancer you will need the doctor to refer you to pathology to get a Prostate Specific Antigen count about every 3 months. This will show you if what you are doing is making the problem better or worse. Do NOT have a biopsy. I value your life! Just add your name and E-mail address on my web site and you may download this free.

Please leave any comments or questions on my web site, I will either answer then by E-mail or in my next article, thank you.
